Quartersawn White Oak Doors
Matching quartersawn oak molding is also available at Moldings by Homestead
Quartered and rift sawn lumber is manufactured at the sawmill by sawing the log at a certain angle to the annular growth rings of the log (see illustration below). This sawing method creates a very unique grain pattern in the board. For quartersawn lumber the growth rings of the tree run must run close to perpendicular to the face of the board. For rift sawn lumber the growth rings must run at approximately a 30 to 45 degree angle to the face of the board. For plain sawn lumber the growth rings run approximately parallel to the face of the board.
Quartered and rift sawn lumber is more stable because the expansion and contraction across the face of the board when exposed to temperature and humidity fluctuations is much less than in plain sawn lumber . Red and white oak is especially beautiful in its quartersawn form and is very popular for use in wood doors, moldings and flooring.
When ordering quartersawn oak doors you can expect some rift sawn lumber mixed in with the quartered and visa versa. Some boards may actually show quartersawn at one end and change to rift sawn at the other end due to the unique graining patterns of each tree and individual board. Quartersawn boards usually show a heavy fleck pattern (see photo below) but not always. Rift sawn is very straight grained while plain sawn has a cathedral grain pattern.
Quartersawn White Oak has a straight grain but with wood rays or "fleck". The rays form a conspicuous figure, sometimes referred to as flecks. It is frequently seen in antique furniture and turn of the century woodworking and has recently made a comeback with the resurgence of mission style furniture. Color is a pale yellow-brown. Quartersawn wood is highly stable and warp resistant with a minimal amount of expansion and contraction. Our Quartersawn White Oak Doors can be finished natural or with the stain of your choice.
Botanical name: Quercus alba
Noticeable differences in color and graining may occur between the above sample and finished doors.
